It’s official. SEB is back in business in Hong Kong. CEO Annika Falkengren formally opened the bank’s premises in the city’s financial heart on Friday (11 November) at a gala reception for more than 200 customers and local dignitaries. In her opening speech Falkengren talked of returning to the city  with "a much wider Asian footprint with more extensive resources and a broader range of offerings across our operations. This enables us to support you - our customers - from a much more holistic perspective.”

“Creating a green economy rests on making it profitable to be green, and non-profitable to be black,” SEB’s senior economist Klas Eklund told a keen audience of investors and researchers on Tuesday at what is considered “the event” for responsible investment.

The annual event, this year held in the Swedish town of Sigtuna and sponsored by SEB, brings together the world’s leading academics and investors. Eklund’s presentation brought the “economist’s” perspective to the discussion on how to address environmental degradation and climate change.

Annika Falkengren yesterday rang the closing bell at Nasdaq OMX’s Times Square market site in New York. In her remarks at the ceremony she gave some background on the bank’s business. She noted that SEB is a clear market leader in equities trading in its home markets – more than 10 per cent of shares that trade on the Nordic and Baltic exchanges do so through SEB Enskilda Equities.

SEB launched its exchange traded fund (ETF) offering yesterday (17 March) providing an even more holistic savings portfolio for customers.

It made news in every part of the world, from France to Indonesia and the US – with the New Year Estonia joined the eurozone. Also hitting the news was the SEB ATM where the first euros were officially withdrawn by Prime Minister Andrus Ansip.

 During the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai, SEB has stepped up efforts to position itself as the gateway to the Nordic markets for Chinese financial institutions. The timing is right as the Chinese government has started to cautiously relax controls on the flow of capital in and out of the country.

Eastbrook Information Lab, in its annual Finansbarometern survey, named SEB best bank for businesses (Årets affärsbank) in Sweden in 2010. In the survey, the largest of its kind, around 1,000 companies in Sweden with annual revenue of at least 250 million Swedish kronor (27 million euro) have provided judgement on several aspects of their banking relationships.

For 20 days, the ship Briggen Tre Kronor of Stockholm will sail around the Baltic sea stopping in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. On board are mentors and students from SEB's mentoring program. The initiative aims to draw attention to SEB's work on sustainability issues, especially its dedication to a cleaner Baltic sea and support of future generations.

SEB sells its German retail business to Spain’s Banco Santander and will going forward focus on its Merchant Banking and Wealth Management businesses in Germany.

“I am pleased that we now have found a long term solution for German Retail. The restructuring in Germany is in line with our long term strategy to be the relationship bank – with a universal offering in Sweden and the Baltic countries and a wholesale offering in the Nordic countries and Germany,” says Annika Falkengren.
