A new survey commissioned by SEB shows that a majority of Swedes – 55 per cent – would vote no if a referendum on euro adoption was held today. That’s the highest figure on record.

Robert Bergqvist“Economic and financial difficulties in the euro zone over the past few months have turned around public opinion and made Swedes favour the krona over the euro,” says SEB’s Chief Economist Robert Bergqvist.

The SEB-commissioned survey shows that only 37 per cent of Swedes would vote yes to euro adoption while eight per cent don’t know or won’t disclose their opinion.

Statistics Sweden, the national statistics agency, has done similar surveys since 1997 and the latest one from November 2009 showed 42 per cent would have voted no to the euro then.

“The gap between those who say yes and those who say no is 18 per cent in our survey, which is the highest figure since 2007. Using Statistics Sweden’s surveys for comparison, the share who says no has never been higher,” Berqvist says.
