Nine million letters go green

Since April, SEB in Germany sends all letters and packages under Deutsche Post DHL’s GoGreen concept. The effect will be a yearly reduction of CO2 emissions of 300 tons for SEB. Deutsche Post DHL GoGreen delivery

The GoGreen concept guarantees that emissions resulting from the transportation of letters and packages are climate compensated for. As an example, Deutsche Post DHL supports the generation of hydroelectric and agricultural crop waste power in a small power plant.

Ralf Weippert, SEB Germany“This is another measure which contributes to our group-wide goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 20 per cent by the year 2011 and 45 per cent by 2015,” says Ralf Weippert, head of the postal service team and environmental officer for SEB in Germany.

“In 2009 we sent approximately nine million letters through Deutsche Post DHL. For CO2-neutral mail using GoGreen we pay far less than one cent more per letter or package,” he adds.

In his function as environmental officer, Weippert is currently preparing a CO2 balance sheet for SEB in Germany, which includes all implemented and planned measures. He also needs this CO2 balance sheet in order to develop an environmental management system according to the international environmental management standard called ISO 14001.  The certification process is scheduled for completion by the end of 2010.
